Short Session

July 12, 2007

Quick session of .02/.05 tonight on Stars (5 tables). Not much of anything happened I did pay off a couple hands when I had 2 pair vs. a big river bet. I kept having to lay hands down on the river when I had top pair top kicker or a decent pair with a draw to shoves which were probably call bluffs, but I wasn’t going to call $5 into a 7$ pot all night. So, I was down a couple bucks over the course of about 250 hands. It appears everyone loves the call bluff or representing the call bluff. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don’t. Example:

I probably had 10 hands like that.

Not really sure how I ended up 5 tabling instead of 4 tabling.

Sorta Held

July 10, 2007

I got down to heads up, played tough poker. This was the problem hand:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold’em Tourney, Big Blind is t2000 (3 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from http://www.flopturnriver.comFlopTurnRiver.com (Format: Plain Text)

Hero (t23761)
SB (t42450)
BB (t1289)

Preflop: Hero is Button with Kc, 5h.
Hero calls t2000, SB completes.

Flop: (t3300) 6d, Kh, Js (3 players)
SB bets t2000, Hero calls t2000.

Turn: (t7300) Qc (3 players)
SB bets t2000, Hero calls t2000.

River: (t11300) 5s (3 players)
SB bets t2000, Hero calls t2000.

Final Pot: t15300

Results below:
SB has Ks Jh (two pair, kings and jacks).
BB has 9s 7c (high card, king).
Hero has Kc 5h (two pair, kings and fives).
Outcome: SB wins t15300.

They had just had a confrontation the previous hand and were about even stacked – I was the chipleader pretty much until that point. I didn’t know if I was ahead as the hand progressed, but I planned to check it down – the old principal of not pushing anyone out when you’ve got the shortstack guy on the ropes. When my second pair hit, I had to see the river. I figured the guy didn’t know about checking down against the shortstack, it’s the only reason I was in the hand to begin with.

Anyway, I was super-happy with my performance. I got a nice stack of chips early from a nice run of cards and stacking someone with a set of 9s. I was card dead through the middle of the tourney, but I was able to use my stack to slowly build some chips. Toward the end I lost a couple of confrontations where I was ahead (TT vs 99, AK vs rags), but had enough chips to survive.

So, heads up I was really short. I fought back to this point:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold’em Tourney, Big Blind is t2000 (2 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from http://www.flopturnriver.comFlopTurnRiver.com (Format: Plain Text)

Hero (t15661)
Button (t51839)

Preflop: Hero is BB with Qs, Kh.
Button raises to t6000, Hero raises to t15561, Button calls t9561.

Flop: (t31122) 4h, As, Js (2 players)

Turn: (t31122) 7s (2 players)

River: (t31122) 6d (2 players)

Final Pot: t31122

Results below:
Hero has Qs Kh (high card, ace).
Button has Jc 5h (one pair, jacks).
Outcome: Button wins t31122.

It’s an easy shove for me because I’m short. IF I double, I’m good to go. Oh well.

July 7, 2007

I was bad tonight – I couldn’t find any .05/.10 tables, so I went to a juicy .10/.25 table and bought in for $8, about 5% of my UB roll. I was there for a round when this hand happened:

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold’em, $.25 BB (9 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from http://www.flopturnriver.comFlopTurnRiver.com (Format: Plain Text)

Final Pot: $17.80

Results below:
UTG has Ac Qh (two pair, aces and queens).
Hero has Ks Kc (three of a kind, kings).
Outcome: Hero wins $17.80.

I knew this guy was pretty aggressive, and probably had a decent hand to play UTG, because he’s fairly tight. I’ve seen him at .05/.10 before, so I was pretty familiar with his style. I figured I could make a weak looking bet on the flop as if it were a CBet, and he’d raise it, but if I checked it, he’d bet the turn, I’d call, and he’d check fold the river. Sure enough, he did raise my CBet, I just pushed the rest. I hoped he had AK and was stuck, but it didn’t matter, he called with AQ. I was really happy with this play, and I think it worked well because I knew my opponent.

I thought about staying at my .10/.25 table, but my better judgment told me to get up, so I did. Hit and run – some .05/.10 opened up so I went back down. I was up a bit more for the night, but nothing special.

Played in some Stars tourneys, no cards, got caught stealing after being blinded down – not worth mentioning really.

Side note – I sent some emails to support at UB and FT – I’m trying to get them to allow me to use a rakeback affiliate even though I already have accounts on both. It can’t hurt to ask. We’ll see what they say.

I thought it was a very credible bluff – it looks like I’m slowplaying a T and then valuebetting it on the end. I’m positive he doesn’t flop a pair, and the 2 on the turn doesn’t look like it helps, and if it does, I’d hope he can lay it down.

My big question is – did I not bet enough on either hand? The 2nd one is the bigger concern.

Repeat after me. They are unaware. 90% of these players are unaware. Your fold equity does not exist. It is not worth it to push small edges at these stakes without a large bankroll. Go with your gut.

Shortstack Results

June 21, 2007

Started out bad right off the bat. Really didn’t see any hands on any of my 4 tables for about the first 30 hands. Then I caught AQ in the BB, went for a fairly big reraise, only caller is UTG, who is fairly tight. I figure he has a medium pair or AK. Needless to say, the flop had an A, we got it all in, and sure enough, AK. -4. A few hands later, a loose raiser raised, I raised all in with my $2.90 (was getting blinded), UTG calls with 66, no A, no Q. -4 more. Playing deep stacked, I’m probably not going to lose that bad with either hand, but I chose to go that route. Not good. Cards were awful for the most part. Played less than 10% at all my tables.

Well, the next two hands happened in about 5 minutes time on the same table, both against the same guy, and that was pretty much it for the night.

Free Money and Diversified Funds

May 11, 2007

There’s nothing better than free money, especially when it ends up in your online poker account. Ulitmate Bet must be getting desperate, because they put $10 in my account to get me to try the site again.

Now, I’m not a major fan of UB. Why? Because when I first started my online poker adventure, they were the first site I tried, at the request of a friend of mine. The first thing I noticed was the customer service was terrible. They were going through some kind of upgrade mishap, and I had a terrible time depositing any money there, or getting anyone to help me out. So, I said forget it and opened an acocunt on Pokerstars.

Well, that friend of mine continued to beg me to deposit some money there so we could play some SNGs together, so I finally did – $80. One nice thing about it was I got a matching deposit bonus, something Pokerstars never does. The SNG experiment didn’t go so well. I just didn’t have enough of a bankroll to handle the swings of $5 and $10 SNGs. I got down to $.07 and I never redeposited.

Three nice things about this tiny $10 in my UB account:
1) I know a lot more about BR management than I did when I started playing online.
2) I have $45 of uncleared bonus from my original deposit.
3) It appears it’s easier to clear your bonus than it used to be (I’m going to examine this in another post).

So, with those 3 things in mind, I’m on a new quest – clearing my bonus on UB at the .01/.02 tables. As long as I play a solid game, I don’t see any reason why I can’t do it. I was able to turn my last $3 on Pokerstars into usable money without a bonus, so I’m thinking this should be easy.

There are some differences between .01/.02 at PS and UB. Notably the buyin on UB – it’s a max of $2. This is good and bad. The good is that stack sizes will be relative to mine with the smaller buyin (although it’s a huge percentage still – I’m buying in for 20% of my BR, usually not recommended). When I started working my way back up on Stars, I was buying in for $1 with everyone else buying in for $5. People were less inclinded to let me draw. I was forced to play top pair very aggressively. The bad is that it’s that you’re buying in for a shorter stack – your implied odds are lower (which means my PTBB/100 will be lower). That means tightening up. Junk hands aren’t going to be profitable without all that money behind. PS allows a buyin of up to $5 (250BB) vs the $2 (100BB) on UB. 100BB isn’t exactly shortstack poker, but with most of the stacks between .80 and 2.00, there will be a lot of cases where playing small pairs after a raise probably just won’t be worth it, and that’s where a large portion of my profit comes from – stacking someone with a small set against a high pocket pair. If your opponent doesn’t have 10 times his preflop raise left in his stack (it’s really 8, but you have the rake and the times you will lose set over set to consider, so I like the overlay), it really isn’t worth it, especially in early position.

So, with all that it mind, I played my first 4 table session last night. I was a little brazen, and bought in for $2.00 on 4 tables – 80% of my new BR in play. I should have bought in for 4x$1. How did I do? Within the first 5 hands I was stacked – flopped a nut straight against a set, and the river paired giving the guy a boat (just bad luck, I would have played the hand the same way he did – he played it correctly). 5 hands later, I lost with KK vs. TT to a rivered T (I got it in on the flop). Down almost $4 dollars. I put the rest of my money on the table, and then came this hand:

I normally don’t make that flop call, but because everyone had called in front, my call ends the betting, and the board doesn’t look like it helped anyone, I may be able to take it away, or I may get lucky and catch a card for .02. I know I can get paid by crazy if I hit something – he was playing 85%/25%/8 and getting lucky. I hit the money card on the turn. I wasn’t afraid of a set of jacks, because the table was pretty crazy. If someone had JJ preflop, there would have been a raise. I was slightly afraid of a straight, but I had boat outs if I was behind.

I was up and down after fighting my way back at my other tables, but overall up 35% for the session. I think if I can just maintain my tight steady game that I have at Stars, I should be able to clear that bonus on UB. I’ll probably stop all play at Stars and FT until I clear it or bust out, whichever comes first.

UB 13.53 (45.29 in pending bonus)

I played three doublestack 90 man $1.25 tourneys on Friday night. In two of the three tourneys I made it to the low 20s, and probably could have coasted to the money, but pressed my good hands and got busted.

I played another on Saturday, I think I played really well. I didn’t get outstanding cards, but I trusted my reads. I did take a chance on a preflop race (my 88 vs. a super-lag’s AQ), where the call wasn’t really necessary, but I figured I was the chipleader at the time, if I caught, I’d win the tourney. Well, he caught a straight on the river and put me pretty low in chips. However, I managed to stick around for a bit with some solid play. This was the last hand of the tourney for me.

Yay – a victory! The guy got tired. He started playing really dumb hands at the end, and even said ‘I’m sick of playing’. He had shown a push with 24o previously, so a push with 55 was an easy decision heads up. He could have folded and waited for something better to call with than 8 high to CALL with, but he just wanted to go to bed I guess.

I’m not sure how many of these I’m going to play. While I like the doublestacks and the amount of play (I think it gives better players a chance to win), I just can’t sit down for 4.5 hours to win one very often.
